Q. COVID-19 Closure
Can I still return my library books?
We would encourage you to hold onto any books you may have until our libraries re-open. If however, you are unable to hold onto these, our external book return is still operating at Colchester (halfway down the library building Silberrad side - you will need your ID card to open the slot) and Southend (outside the Forum building to the right as you approach the main doors).
When will my books be due back?
All Colchester and Loughton loans have been extended to 12th October 2020. This will be extended again depending on how long our libraries need to remain closed. For Southend users due dates have been extended to 7th September 2020.
Will I be charged fines?
No we will not be charging fines during our closure period.
Can I request a book?
Currently access to print book stock is unavailable and our usual request/recall service is suspended until we can re-open. There are a number of ways you can search for access to ebooks - check out our FAQ here
What if a book I need isn't available online in the library?
There are two options. If you require a chapter or few pages from a book, you can place an interlibrary loan request and our Interlending Team will see if it is available electronically and try and source it for you from another library.
If it is a whole book you need access to, you can place a Purchase Suggestion and our team will see if there is an ebook available to purchase. Currently the turnaround time for purchase requests is 3-5 days.
Can I borrow a laptop?
Unfortunately laptops are unavailable at this time. You can apply for a loan PC from https://www1.essex.ac.uk/fees-and-funding/current/hardship/default.aspx
Whilst the Colchester library is closed, where else can I study/print on campus?
There are several places on campus which are currently still accessible.

How can I access Eikon now that we are not on campus?
We are working with the provider to look at ways we can provide remote access. Alternative databases such as Orbis, WRDS, Passport and Filing Expert should provide some of the data you may require.
We suggest you use web app as much as possible because we are unable to provide technical support on how to download the application and add in.
