I have authored an article/chapter that I want to use in my teaching, but the library does not have access to it. Can I share the accepted manuscript or a pre-published version with my students?

Answer

This can depend on the terms of your publishing agreement; many publishers permit authors to retain certain rights over their accepted manuscript or to share specific versions for teaching purposes. However, this is unfortunately not always the case, and the permissions granted can vary between publishers and individual contracts.

For journal articles accepted after 1 October 2024, the Author Rights Retention Policy applies, but for items published before this date we recommend reviewing your publishing agreement to confirm that sharing is permitted. This will ensure that you remain fully compliant with copyright obligations.

We also strongly recommend that any permitted version is provided to your students via your reading list rather than being uploaded to Moodle, to ensure that students have a consistent experience for accessing resources. Please get in touch with us at libline@essex.ac.uk and we will be happy to help facilitate this through our digitisation service.
