Online database of films for the film department, more up to date for remote learning, and would make space on 5th floor for more books

Answer

Thank you for your suggestion.

We do now have access to Kanopy, a service which allows us to purchase films on a title-by-title basis so that Essex students and staff can stream them on their own devices. This is in addition to Box of Broadcasts , which provides access to films which have previously been screened on mainstream UK television channels.

Unfortunately, however, there are no film databases available for institutions to purchase or subscribe to at the moment which would provide all of the content that we need (subscriptions to Amazon, Netflix, etc. are only available to individuals). For the past couple of years we have been making essential film screenings for taught modules available via Panopto (ListenAgain) where the films are not available for us to purchase via Kanopy. Due to copyright restrictions we are only able to make these Panopto versions (which are recorded from the Library's DVD collection) available to students on the corresponding module(s) for restricted periods of time.

If there are any specific films you need to access, you can request them directly via Kanopy if they are available in the database - you can either search by keyword of browse by genre. If not, then please do feel free to contact us at libline@essex.ac.uk with the details of the film(s) and we will check if there are any other licence options available. All content we have purchased through Kanopy so far is available to browse in the database, but links to the films are also included in Library Search.

WIth regard to space on 5th floor, this will be considered with any potential refurbishments in this area.
